With closer tree spacings and more rapid tree growth of horticulturally superior, disease-free selections under intensive cultural and pest management practices, the timely containment of tree size by pruning becomes more critical. The first section of this bulletin describes the trend toward higher density plantings, the horticultural and economic concepts important to understanding the advantages of such plantings, and recommendations for tree spacing. The second section deals with the theory and practice of pruning for tree size containment.
