Soil Conservation in Andean Cropping Systems: Oil Erosion and Crop Productivity in Traditional and Forage-Legume Based Cassava Cropping Systems in the South Colombian Andes
Martin Ruppenthal
Sound crop and soil management such as the use of fertilizers and lime, pest and disease control, optimum planting densities and patterns, selection of appropriate crop varieties among others are fundamental to diminish soil erosion and achieve greate ryields. From the study it may be concluded that water erosion on South West Colombian Inceptisols can be controlled effectively and acceptable yields can be achieved by (i) cropping of cassava on properly constructed contour ridges on slopes up to 20% and (ii) using contour strips of densly planted grass barriers at adequate distances from 5% slope on.
