The presentation explains what systems are all about and how they allow to comprehend realties and facilitate the formulation of working hypotheses. The basic concepts of a system, such as its boundaries, structure, function, state and types are explained. The presentation then highlights the application of the systems concept to agriculture and defines farming systems, cropping systems, land use systems. The different types of system interactions are explained and system assessment criteria are given. The final part deals with the kind of questions that need to be answered in the context of systems analysis and describes the role of multi and terndiscipclinary in systems research.
