Bananas and plantains (Musa species) are important food staples in the tropics and subtropics.Over 400 million people throughout the developing countries of the tropics and subtropics are dependent on these crops, as both a staple food and an important commodity for marketing locally and internationally. To ensure the safe long-term conservation of Musa genetic resources, Bioversity is supporting research on cryopreservation, i.e. storage at ultra-low temperature, usually that of liquid nitrogen.
