it is hoped that one of the important functions of this book will be to promote interest in, and some understanding of, the fundamental actions of herbicides and to point out the need for basic studies in plant physiology and biochemistry as an obligate step in the design of herbicides with newer and more discriminating selectivities. In fact we may have to rely more and more in the future on such people as the comparative plant physiologist and the biochemical or even bio-molecular taxonomist to guide us in our search for new toxicants. Some hint of the difficultires and complexities of the search that is ahead appears in the final chapter by Professor H. Linser on herbicide design.
