This paper presents an overview of the research and production status of Amaranthus.  A brief review of the areas of production indicates that vegetable amaranth is grown mostly for home or local market consumption.  It is an ideal hot-season vegetable for humid climates.  Grain amaranth is presently grown in Third World countries of Asia and the Americas.  The research in amaranth has taken major strides in the last two years. A good start has been made in germ plasm collection, genetic studies, varietal selection, and in nutrition studies.  First attempts at commercial handling of the grain crop has indicated changes needed in both varieties and their growing methods.
