Abstract, ResearchGate, 2017

The introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria has caused a lot of controversies. On the one hand, the protagonists of GMOs in Nigeria argued that its introduction will boost food production, promote sustainable agriculture and help avert the climatic problems associated with the global warming. The antagonists on the other hand, are of the view that the introduction of GMOs into African countries is another means of European and American colonization of Africa through seeds and food system. Hence, Africa becomes perpetually dependent on Europe and America. In the light of this, the public needs to be aware of the potential benefits and risks associated with this new technology (genetic technology). In this paper, there will be analysis of relevant literature on the adoption of GM technology in developing countries, particularly some African countries that have adopted GM crops. The paper adopts a historic and multi-disciplinary approach and also discusses the questions of safety of genetically modified foods, potential benefits and risks. This paper is concluded by summarizing the issues raised on how GM technology can be adopted for agricultural development in Nigeria.
