Sesbania sesban, var. ‘Mount Cotton’ Available

Many of our readers are familiar with Sesbania sesban, a nitrogen-fixing shrub used for organic matter and fodder that is widely promoted in the humid tropics. ECHO now has seed of Sesbania sesban var nubica, cultivar “Mount Cotton”. Sesbania sesban regrows vigorously after being cut, producing high yields of fodder and organic matter. Widely adapted, it tolerates drought, waterlogging, and soil acidity, alkalinity, and salinity. In University of Queensland studies, ‘Mount Cotton’ was shown to have outstanding forage yields at five locations in Queensland, superior to that of other accessions of Sesbania sesban and to Leucaena leucocephala cv. Cunningham. In other studies at the University of Queensland, Sesbania sesban was shown to have high nutritive value (28% crude protein) and high dry matter digestibility (86%).
