The public is invited to attend “An Evening of Agroecology and Agroforestry”, a free ZOOM seminar and conversation with Miguel A. Altieri, PhD and David Sansone on Monday, October 14, 4-7 pm (Hawaii Time). The event is sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, UH-Hilo Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center, and Marine & Environmental Research Institute of Pohnpei.
Dr. Altieri, Professor Emeritus of Agroecology at University of California, Berkeley will be teaching about Agroecology–a science, practice, and social movement that focuses on the application of ecological principles to agricultural practices to solve the sustainability and social inequality problems of agriculture. He is known as “the Godfather of Agroecology” and is the author of many articles and books on the topic including Agroecology: The Science of Sustainable Agriculture.
Mr. Sansone, the owner of Hawaii Edible Landscaping, LLC. has over 20 years of experience in agroforestry, and will share how Agroforestry, the combination of agriculture and forestry practices and species, can help cultivators develop natural solutions to beat the weeds and pests, increase production, resist climate change, protect the water, and revitalize the soil. The two will also have a wide ranging discussion about these topics, current challenges, and the future of sustainable agriculture.
