Seeds are one of the important factors influencing yield potential. Crop seeds contain all the genetic information to determine yield potential, adaptation to environmental conditions, and resistance to insect pests and disease. Good seed quality is the foundation for long-term productivity growth. One of the farmers’ most critical management decisions is the selection of seed source and variety. The cost of seed (for planting) usually is 10-15% of the total cost of production. However, poor seed quality will affect every component of yield, thus reducing the overall yield potential of the crop. Based on surveys and interviews conducted by USAID-ERA in partnership with several Senegal governments and public and private institutions, a three-part seed training and education program was conducted and focused on seed technology, analysis, and evaluation. In August, 2015, we completed both the technical (workshops) and practical (laboratory and field) training programs and awarded 30 laboratory and field technicians with certificates.
