Morus sp.
Moraceae

Categories

Description

This is an old delicious Florida variety that originated in Ft. Myers Florida in a place called Tice. It has the largest leaves of any I have seen and is one of the most beautiful shade trees. It has long out reaching branches that weep toward the ground in a beautiful tropical look.

The Tice mulberry (Morus hybr. 'Tice') is a tropical-looking mulberry tree with large leaves that are sometimes broader than they are long. It's similar to the Florida Giant mulberry, but the Tice mulberry leaves are unusually broad. The Tice mulberry has the following characteristics:

  • Fruit: Large, sweet, black berries
  • Appearance: Large, shade tree
  • Growth: Quickly leafs out in early spring after winter dormancy
  • Edible parts: Fresh, pies, preserves, and jellies

Origin

In addition to jackfruit, breadfruit, and figs, mulberries belong to the family Moraceae, which contains approximately 40 genera and 1,000 species. While there is much debate on exactly how many taxa belong to the genus Morus, there are approximately 64 species currently acknowledged, the majority of which occur in Asia.

Uses

The fruit is delicious, sweet, with a strong mulberry flavor and a hint of tanginess

The large leaves are great for feeding greens loving animals like tortoises
