The first four chapters of the book are introductory in nature and recognize the various backrounds of students taking their first course in biochemistry. Amino acids and proteins are the first classes of biomolecules discussed in the book's second section.  A presentation of the molecular aspects of the structure and the biological function of proteins, with emphasis on myoglobin, hemoglobin, and enzymes procedes a description of other principal types of biomolecules. A presentation of the molecular basis of bioenergetics serves as a prelude to the third section, which emphasizes the synthesis of ATP and includes chapters on glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, electron transport, oxidative phosphorylation, and photosynthesis. The fourth section is devoted to the three classes of macromolecules of the Central Dogma and stresses molecular studies on DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis.  The last three chapters are devoted to immunology, hormones and second messengers, and human nutrition.
