Why include the disabled?
- Agricultural operations have high risk of accidents resulting in fatality/disability. Once disabled, agriculture is difficult. Lack of other livelihood opportunities in rural areas. Important to rehabilitate disabled within agriculture
- Disabilities can exacerbate poverty and malnutrition. Poverty can increase the likelihood of disability.
- Even within well off households the disabled can be extremely isolated, marginalized and vulnerable. Inclusion can provide them a valued social role and improved their intra-household status as well as economic empowerment.
