Session: By using green manure/cover crops, rural families can make sure they have enough calories, with or without droughts. By growing edible gm/ccs (nearly all of which are leguminous, they can get enough proteins. By drying and storing the leaves of lablab beans or cowpeas, they can add to their diets a free source of plenty of proteins, minerals and vitamins that are available year-round.

Roland Bunch has worked in rural development in over 50 developing nations for nearly as many years, and has specialized in green manure/cover crops (plants that fertilize the soil and overcome droughts) for the last 35 years. He is the author of Two Ears of Corn, which has been translated into 10 languages and sold 65,000 copies, and of Restoring the Soil, a book published by ECHO on how smallholder farmers around the world use gm/ccs.
