Broccoli: Waltham 29
(Brassica oleracea var. italica)
Broccoli is a cruciferous crop (cabbage family) grown for the head that is made of a cluster of many, dark green buds formed at the end of an edible stalk. It is a temperate crop that can be grown in the tropics at higher elevations. Broccoli has become a common, favorite vegetable around the world and is one of the most nutritious green vegetables.
An open-pollinated heirloom broccoli developed at the University of Massachusetts in the 1950s. The plants produce uniform large heads with consistent color. After harvesting the main head, plants will also produce multiple side shoots or florets that are harvestable.
