Growing our way to health: The intricate links between global health and agricultural development
Presented at the ECHO International Agriculture Conference 2015
The cyclical relationship between agricultural development and human health can hinder or drive economic development. In this presentation, Dr. Hanson will explore the impacts of poor health on agricultural productivity and yield; and the inter-connected role of food scarcity and malnutrition on early mortality and limited economic growth. Dr. Hanson will also discuss solutions that may unite the health and agricultural sectors around shared goals of human and economic development in a context of environmental sustainability.
Presenter:
Christy Hanson is the Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship and a Distinguished Lecturer in International Studies. Dr. Hanson has nearly 20 years experience as a practitioner of international public health. Her primary area of expertise is tuberculosis (TB) control and has provided technical support to countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through her previous positions with the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, PATH, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. Hanson received her MPH from the University of Minnesota, and her PhD in International Health Systems, with a concentration in Health Economics, from Johns Hopkins University.
