A key objective in piloting Participatory Rangeland Management (PRM) in Kenya and Tanzania was to support empowerment of pastoral women – to improve access to material, human and social resources; to enable women to have greater control over setting goals and taking action to achieve them; and to improve women’s wellbeing and capacity to make decisions based on their choices. The PRM project provided opportunities to value and use women’s knowledge and their roles in rangeland management through expanding their livelihood activities, improving their understanding of natural resource management challenges and potential solutions, and increasing their participation in decision-making processes. The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), together with several partners including CELEP, produced the 8-page brief on “Empowering women through participatory rangeland management” (2021).
