Crop residues are becoming an incredibly important part of the diets of ruminant animals in developing countries. This booklet explains how to feed straw to ruminants. It indicates when it is useful to treat straw (with urea or ammonia) in order to improve its nutritional value, and how to do so at the farm level. It also describes how to feed untreated straw, particularly when excess straw is availible and can be distributed. It emphasizes the importance of supplementation when feeding treated or unrteated straw to different categories of animals. It gives practical advice to extension workers and farmers for the application of the two methods described and indicates further reading for those who want to know more about the subject.
