In this account, an attempt is made to reveal those 'treasures of wisdom and experience' which, as soil scientists, we felt most at ease in seeking; and which have not received systematic treatment elsewhere. We have not attempted to deal exhaustively with the mass of descriptive literature from all parts of the tropics giving details of the great variety of local or regional cropping practices, and of the deterioration of the natural vegetation under increasing population pressure, but have simply summarized what seemed important to our main theme.
