Agroforestry Systems: Contour Hedgerows of Woody Perennials Reduce Erosion, Improve Soil Structure, Increase Food Crop Yields, and Produce an Abundance of Fodder and Fuelwood
Michael D Benge
Agroforestry systems using nitrogen fixing woody perennials, such as Leucaena Leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium, planted in contour hedges on hillsides (or alleys on level ground), have proven to be as inexpensive and effective technology to control soil erosion, improve soil structure, and increase crop yields. SImultaneously, these systems product abundant forage and fuelwood.
