This is the 2nd volume of the multivolume Prosea (Plant Resources of South-East Asia) Handbook which aims to summarize knowledge about useful plants for workers in education, research, extension and industry. Perennial species grown primarily for their edible fruits (fleshy or dry) which are generally consumed raw, and also a number of perennial species grown primarily for their seeds which are consumed raw, roasted or boiled, are included in this volume. The introductory chapter further defines the species covered and discusses the roles of fruits and fruit growing in South-East Asia, and the botany, agronomy, harvesting, postharvest handling, processing, utilization, breeding and genetic resources, and prospects for cultivation of fruit crops in general. Chapter 2 comprises monographs on 120 species providing information (where known) on vernacular names, origin and geographical distribution, uses, production and international trade, properties, botany (with line drawings), pests and diseases, harvesting, yield, handling after harvest, genetic resources and breeding, prospects and literature sources. Summarized data for another 275 minor species are presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 lists some 400 species bearing edible fruits or seeds which are included in other commodity groups since the use of their fruits is only of secondary importance. The book also has a list of frequently cited references, a glossary, indexes of scientific and vernacular plant names, and a description of the Prosea Programme.
