Broccoli is a cruciferous crop (cabbage family) grown for the head that is made of a cluster of many, dark green buds formed at the end of an edible stalk. An open-pollinated heirloom broccoli developed at the University of Massachusetts in the 1950s. The plants produce uniform large heads with consistent color. After harvesting the main head, plants will also produce multiple side shoots or florets that are harvestable.
