Grasses are among the world's most widespread plants.  They are an economical livestock feed and when associated with legumes, through the rhizobium/pasture/animals symbiosis, maintain and improve soil fertility while sustaining animal production.  Grazing lands cover vast areas of the earth's surface that are often unsuited to arable cropping:  their correct management is very important to avoid erosion and environmental degradation.  Suitable grasses are available for reclaiming soils subject to flooding or salinity; many are useful in soil conservation even under harsh conditions.

This book describes the wide range of grasses suited to pasture and other uses and gives information on their adaptation, cultivation and management, necessary for increasing production and for ensuring improved land use, especially in developing countries.
