The book gives an introduction to the national grid and then focuses on possibilities for independent and small communities; diesel generators, micro-hydro, wind energy, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, gasifiers, biogas, steam and batteries. The different technologies are described and costs are given, as well as the requirements in terms of inputs and skills for installation and operation. Information and advice is given on using electricity; how to calculate the size of technology needed; and how to choose appropriate appliances. Case studies from developing countries highlight successful women's initiatives with these technolgoies.
