There are many definitions of environmental chemistry. To some, it is the chemistry of the Earth's natural processes in air, water, and soil. More commonly, as in this book, it is concerned principally with the chemical aspects of problems that human beings have created in the natural environment. Although the science underlying environmental problems is often maddeningly complex, the central aspects of it can usually be understood and appreciated with only introductory chemistry as a background. In this book, that background is the only general chemical knowledge that is assumed, although students who have not had some organic chemistry as part of the introductory course may want to work through the material in the Appendix, especially before tackling the material on toxic organics in Chapter .
