The theme and objective of the second edition of Environmental Science: The Way the World Works is to develop an understanding of the principles underlying the support and maintenance of all ecosystems; show how our management of the human ecosystem, in many cases, is counter to these principles, and how environmental problems, if not tragedies, occur as a result; and show how solutions to environmental problems lie in the direction of recognizing ecological principles and managing our human systems accordingly.
