This collection of farmer training materials was originally developed by Canadian Foodgrains Bank and African Conservation Tillage Network staff to support agricultural training projects in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors encourage agriculture development practitioners to submit ideas or requests for additional materials on related subjects.

The editable source documents (.docx and .pub) of these materials are available in many languages from the CFGB database.  The source documents are updated periodically so check here for the most current formats.  We encourage you to adapt the source for your purposes.

  2. 2017-01-20 What is extension? Traditionally extension has been an approach where information from researchers has been transferred to farmers through extension personnel. The information flow in that case was top down (from researchers to farmers). The assumption was that farmers lack knowledge and hence...
  3. 2017-04-20 Conservation Agriculture (CA)—characterized by the three linked principles of minimizing soil disturbance, permanently covering the soil, and including crop rotations and associations – has proven effective at restoring soil health and fertility, improving the capture and use of rainfall, and...
  4. 2020-04-20 Soil infertility is a key constraint to improving crop production for small-scale farmers. Soils throughout Canadian Foodgrains Bank members’ program areas are degraded and deficient in nutrients and organic matter. Soil testing measures the soil’s health and nutrient holding capacity and...
