Debido al crecimiento de la población humana, los agricultores de muchas partes del mundo no tienen más remedio que cultivar sus tierras continuamente, con recursos escasos para reemplazar los nutrientes extraídos por cada cultivo sucesivo. Los residuos de cultivos a menudo se pierden como fuente de materia orgánica y mantillo, generalmente al quemarlos o eliminarlos como alimento para animales o combustible para cocinar. Especialmente donde las reservas de nutrientes ya son escasas y la capa superficial del suelo está expuesta a la erosión, los suelos pierden su capacidad para mantener un rendimiento de cultivos adecuado. Además, los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, los cambios climáticos adversos, los conflictos humanos y las enfermedades pueden afectar la capacidad de los pequeños agricultores para sostener la capacidad productiva de sus suelos. La agricultura de conservación intenta abordar estos problemas.

La agricultura de conservación (AC) es un enfoque de gestión de la tierra que ahorra recursos y optimiza y mantiene la capacidad de los suelos para producir alimentos. En la AC, la sostenibilidad está vinculada a la preservación ecológica de los paisajes agrícolas. Esto se logra mediante 1) alteración mínima del suelo, 2) mantenimiento de los suelos cubiertos y 3) diversificación de cultivos. La implementación de estos tres elementos requiere una combinación de prácticas, para las cuales existen muchas opciones. Pensar en la AC como un sistema general, en lugar de un conjunto establecido de técnicas, les da a los agricultores y profesionales la libertad de evaluar y adoptar un conjunto de prácticas relacionadas con la AC que sean adecuadas para las necesidades locales.
