Dans le langage le plus simple, l'agroforesterie est la production d'arbres et de cultures non arborescentes et/ou d'animaux sur un même terrain. Les cultures peuvent être cultivées simultanément en associations culturales, en rotation culturale, ou peuvent même être cultivées dans des parcelles distinctes lorsque les matériaux de l'une peuvent être utilisés au profit de l'autre. Cependant, cette définition simple ne prend pas en compte les concepts intégrés associés à l'agroforesterie qui font de ce système de gestion des terres le système agricole le plus autosuffisant et le plus écologiquement sain de tout système agricole. Ainsi, une deuxième définition de l'agroforesterie serait l'intégration des arbres, des plantes et/ou des animaux dans des systèmes productifs, conservateurs à long terme.

L'agroforesterie peut être considérée plus comme une approche que comme une technologie unique et finie. Bien que plusieurs systèmes finis aient été conçus et testés, de telles technologies peuvent nécessiter des ajustements pour des situations particulières. La flexibilité de l'approche agroforestière est l'un de ses avantages.
